UGANDA CHESS TEAM SETS OFF FOR BRICS SPORTS GAMES IN KAZAN, RUSSIA.

In a historic first, Uganda is set to participate in the 2024 BRICS Sports Games, a prestigious multi-sport event in Kazan City, Russia. The Ugandan delegation was officially flagged off on June 16, 2024.

Team Uganda flags off

The BRICS Sports Games, organized annually by the countries of the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), brings together athletes from around the world to compete in various sports disciplines. The 2024 edition, held in Kazan, features 27 different sports with a staggering 90 participating countries and 4751 athletes competing at 17 sports venues

Representing Uganda in the chess category are four distinguished players:

  1. International Master (IM) Arthur Ssegwanyi
  2. Fide Master (FM) Haruna Nsubuga
  3. Woman Fide Master (WFM) Claire Ivy Amoko
  4. Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Shakira Faith Ampaire

Uganda’s participation in the BRICS Sports Games signifies a major milestone for the country, showcasing its growing talent and competitive spirit on the international stage. The involvement in such a prominent event reflects Uganda’s commitment to developing and promoting chess and other sports within the nation.

The Ugandan chess team, led by Eng: Mwaka Emmanuel President of Uganda Chess Federation, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the competition. IM Ssegwanyi, along with FM Haruna Nsubuga, WFM Claire Ivy Amoko, and WCM Shakira Faith Ampaire, are set to compete against some of the best chess players in the world.
