2025 FATHER GRIMES NATIONAL SCHOOLS TEAM CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP: The Legacy Continues, Champions Bound for the USA 🇺🇸

The 2025 Father Grimes National Schools Team Chess Championship, Uganda’s largest and most prestigious inter-school chess competition, was successfully held from May 4th to 8th at Our Lady of Africa – Namilyango (OLAN) in Seeta, Mukono District. This year’s tournament carried exceptional historical weight as it was the first edition held in memory of the late Rev. Father Damian Grimes, who passed away on September 4th 2024. The event was more than a competition — it was a celebration of foresight, discipline, and the enduring legacy of a man who transformed Uganda’s chess.

A British missionary, educator, and visionary, Fr. Damian Grimes introduced chess to Ugandan schools in the 1980s during his tenure as Headmaster of Namasagali College. His belief in using chess to foster discipline, critical thinking, and holistic development laid the foundation for what is now a national educational movement.

Over 25 editions later, the tournament that bears his name continues to shape young minds. In recognition of his service, Fr. Grimes received an MBE (Member of the British Empire) and in 2020, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Uganda Chess Federation. He was laid to rest in Uganda in 2024 — a symbolic act honoring his deep commitment to the nation. Today, his resting place is destined to become a site of pilgrimage for chess players across Africa.

  • Secondary Girls: 264 players
  • Primary Open: 214 players
