TEAM UGANDA AT THE 2ND FIDE CHESS OLYMPIAD FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES – ASTANA 2025

Uganda’s participation at the 2nd FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 19th–26th October 2025, marked another important milestone in the nation’s growing journey toward inclusive chess.

After several intense rounds of competition, Team Uganda displayed resilience, unity, and a fighting spirit that earned them admiration from across the international chess community. In the penultimate round, Uganda faced Zambia, putting up a spirited battle before eventually falling 4–0. Despite the setback, the players maintained great determination and focus heading into the final round.

In their last match of the Olympiad, Uganda faced Team Panama in what turned out to be one of their best performances at the event. The encounter ended 1.5 – 2.5 in favor of Panama, with Uganda registering a win on Board 1 and a draw on Board 3 a commendable finish that demonstrated steady improvement and competitive growth.

Overall, the Olympiad was dominated by Team FIDE 1, who emerged as champions, followed by Poland and Israel in second and third place respectively. Uganda performed well, gaining not just valuable experience but also the confidence and exposure needed to strengthen future performances on the international stage.

The Ugandan delegation’s journey to Astana was made possible through the support of local chess development initiatives, including the SOM Chess Academy and the Robert Katende Initiative, both of which continue to champion inclusive chess across communities in Uganda.
