ROUND 1 AT the 44TH OLYMPIAD CHESS OPEN
The 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad opened in Chennai, India yesterday on the the 28th July 2022 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The games began today, Friday July 29th with Uganda Men’s team taking on EQUATORIAL GUINEA in the open section whilst the Ladies team go toe to toe against CUBA.
The chess Olympiad is a tournament which is organized by the international chess body (FIDE) in which nations of the world compete. it was previously meant to be held in Russia but due to Russia’s aggression on Ukraine, FIDE opted to shift the host and also banning Russia from taking part in this year’s competition.
It was also noted by Ding Liren, the world number 2 that China won’t be a part of the competition due to un highlighted reason.
the event kicked off yesterday yesterday with an opening ceremony and the real action starting today the 29th of July.
Uganda is made up of a very strong and formidable team led by the national coach Fide Master Harold Wanyama who among others FM Patrick Kawuma, FM elect Walter Oka’s, FM Haruna Nsubuga have previously represented Uganda at the chess Olympiad and have the necessary experience to compete at this level of tournament.
The new boy on the team generally known for his simple but solid style is Emmanuel Egesa who has improved drastically in the past 2years.
Its an incredible achievement for him as its every chess players dream of playing at the chess Olympiad and representing the country flag on an international level. He could only afford one loss in the Olympiad qualifiers and remaining unbeaten in the remaining 12 rounds.
He should be really motivated and I expect him to bring great results to the country.
