MATOVU ABEL WINS KIREKA OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2024 AS TOP CHESS GUNS EXIT THE PREMISES UNOTICED.

The 2024 Kireka Open Chess Championship proved to be one of the most competitive and diverse chess events of the year, attracting players from South Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, and Rwanda. concluded in spectacular fashion at Sports View Hotel, Kireka, on December 31st. The 4-day event, running from December 28th to 31st, saw thrilling battles across the boards, Matovu Abel emerging as the ultimate champion after an intense tiebreak match.

Matovu Abel secured the championship title with an impressive 7/8 points. After an initial first-round loss, Matovu displayed remarkable resilience, defeating formidable opponents and clinching victory in the tiebreak against FM Haruna Nsubuga, who also scored 7/8 points. Ngong Samuel Gai from South Sudan rounded out the top three with 6.5 points, followed closely by Ssonko Matthias, also with 6.5 points.

The tournament witnessed the early withdrawal of top-seeded IM Arthur Ssegwanyi, and Takali Milly who faced two surprising losses. Gong Thon Gong of South Sudan the defending champion had a tough run as well.

In the Ladies’ Category, Nakabo Peninah triumphed with 6.5 points, showcasing great skills and determination. She was closely followed by WCM Ndirangu Joyce Nyaruai from Kenya , WFM Sana Omprakash Kayyar, and Kaloki Zuri from Kenya, each scoring 6 points. Ahereza Joan completed the top five with 5.5 points

The junior section showcased future talents, with Ahumuza Apollo and Ninsiima Patricia taking top honors, further highlighting the event’s role in nurturing young players.

Junior players were a highlight of the event, with many holding seasoned opponents to drawn games. Their resilience and growing skill demonstrated the promising future of chess in the region. Mawanda Michael claimed the title in the U1900 section, Samuel Thon Ayuen triumphed in the U1800 category, while Thon Mading Ngang claimed victory in the U1600 section. In the 50+ category, Kaamu Joseph delivered a masterclass performance to secure the top spot.

With its diversity, strategic brilliance, and a platform for both seasoned and upcoming players, the 2024 Kireka Open Chess Championship cemented its reputation as a powerhouse of regional chess.

The event, organized and sponsored by Kireka Chess Club under patron Were Bob with support from the Uganda Chess Federation, has been a staple of the chess calendar for years now.
