
TEAM UGANDA REIGNS SUPREME AT ASICC 2025 WITH MULTIPLE MEDALS

Uganda’s junior chess players delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship (ASICC), held from May 22 to 28 at the Pride Inn Paradise Resort & Spa in Mombasa, Kenya. Competing across six age categories (Under-7 to Under-17), the Ugandan contingent secured multiple medals, showcasing the nation’s youth chess growth.

Uganda sent a strong contingent of talented young chess players to the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championships held in Mombasa, Kenya. Players participated across all age groups from Under 7 to Under 17, with representatives in both Open and Girls categories.

The team stayed at the official event accommodations: Pride Inn Flamingo, Pride Inn Paradise Resort, and Reef Hotel. They competed under strict FIDE regulations, with the standard time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game and 30-second increments from move one.
Team Uganda proudly won multiple Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals, further cementing the country’s reputation as an emerging chess powerhouse in Africa
Asaba Juliet (1726), a prodigy from the Kampala Talented Learning Center (KTLC) and reigning 2025 Uganda Open Ladies Champion, dominated the U15 Girls category. She achieved a a score of 8/9 , clinching the gold medal and reaffirming her status as one of Africa’s most formidable young players win her category with a round to spare

Daniel Odokonyero from Uganda (1661) demonstrated greatness in the U13 Open category, earning a silver medal with a commendable 7.5 points.

In the U11 Open category, Ronald Wabwire delivered an outstanding performance, finishing unbeaten and clinching the bronze medal with 7.5 / 9. As the pre-tournament favorite, his consistent display of skill highlighted the strength and depth of Uganda’s emerging chess talent in the middle age brackets.

Young talent Tumusiime Francis made a significant impact in the U9 Open category, securing a silver medal through consistent and focused play.

In the U15 Open category, Muhirwa Alvin displayed resilience and tactical acumen, earning a bronze medal.

Suhana Anil Yadav (1667) achieved a strong finish in the U15 Girls category, securing the bronze medal with a solid 7/9 score.
Uganda’s youngest players also made their mark:
- U8 Girls: Janelle Rovenna Nyakato Aturinda and Julian Royina Nyangoma Aturinda showcased promising talent.
- U7 Open: Players like Bigisha Garry Noah, Kagoda Mwesigwa Aaron, Kiggundu Ernest Ssengero, Matayo Barigye, and Mulema Sean Wavamunno demonstrated potential for future success.
