UGANDA JUNIOR CHESS TEAM HEADS TO AFRICAN YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2024 IN SOUTH AFRICA
The Ugandan junior chess team has officially been flagged off for the African Youth Chess Championship 2024, set to take place in Gauteng, South Africa, this June. The team comprises 19 talented young players (14 girls and 5 boys ) Accompanying them are 13 supportive parents and other key stakeholders committed to the team’s success.
The players making up this dynamic team are Nolan Alex, Jason Samuel Walusimbi, Kiyan Alpesh, Manzi Munanukye, Samora Mugisha, Tasa Gladys, Nakaweesa Jireh, Siri Vari, Nina Elana, Aine Atubet, Suhana Anil Yadav, Elizabeth Sasi, Aime Ahumuza, Mitchelle Nicolatte, Tumwesigye Zuri, Sana Omprakash, Hannah Mawejje, Ryann Kyla, and Reigner Kayla.
Among these young stars, Nakijjoba Ryann Kyla, a student from Wampeewo Nattake Senior Secondary School, stands out. Ryann, who began playing chess at the age of 7, has become a seasoned competitor, representing Uganda in several international competitions.
“It feels good whenever I win. My biggest challenge is losing a game, but my goal is to gain more experience and achieve higher scores to ensure a bright future,” said Ryann, highlighting her determination and competitive spirit.
The Uganda Chess Federation’s first vice president, Otim Isaac, expressed confidence in the team’s potential. He attributed this optimism to the numerous championships the junior players have participated in, stating, “Our children have gained significant experience from various competitions, and we believe this will reflect in their performance in South Africa.”
The stakes are high for the Ugandan junior chess team as the top-performing team in South Africa will qualify for the World Junior Championships, scheduled to take place from October 15th to 23rd in Brazil. This opportunity adds an extra layer of motivation for the young players, who are eager to make their mark on the international stage.
