WCM TAKALI MILLY WINS THE QUEENS OF CHESS RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT 2025 – 4th Edition

On the 8th March of every year the chess community in Uganda gathers at Gloria Gardens, Namugongo, to celebrate International Women’s Day with the prestigious Queens of Chess Rapid Tournament 2025 being the 4th Edition. The event, aimed at increasing female participation in chess, saw intense competition, with WCM Takali Milly emerging as the champion after scoring an impressive 7.5 out of 8 points.

Following closely behind was WCM Ampaire and Hannah and Zion Mawejje who put up a commendable performance, securing 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The tournament also highlighted the best young talents in various age categories:

Best U20: Hannah, Zion Mawejje Awarded by IM Ssegwanyi Arthur
Best U12: Suhana, Anil Yadav awarded by Mr. Patrick Mukasa
Best U18: WFM Sana, Omprakash Kayyar
Best U10: Talia, Atubet
Best U16: Hailey, Nio Mitchelle

This annual event, held every March 8th 2025 serves as a platform to celebrate women in chess and promote female participation in the sport. As of February 2025, Uganda has 86 active FIDE-rated female players, with an ambitious goal of increasing this number to 200 within two years.

The tournament was successfully directed by Naisanga Sheba Valentine and Nannozi Esther Peninnah, with FA Nakiirya Victoria serving as the Chief Arbiter.

The event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors, including European Travel, Ausi Coaches, Gambit Chess Club, Kireka Chess Club, Servants Chess Academy, Mango Tech, Gloria Gardens, Queens of Chess, and the Uganda Chess Federation.

The Queens of Chess Rapid Chess Tournament continues to be a significant milestone in Ugandan chess, inspiring young girls and women to take up the game and compete at higher levels. With continued support and dedication, the vision of increasing female participation in chess will become a reality, strengthening Uganda’s presence in the global chess community.
